UBSC Open Meet 2018
6th-7thh January 2018
Both the Elite and National Development squad started their 2018 competition diary nice and early at the Hengrove leisure Centre, Bristol with the first Long course open meet of the season. This is a benchmark meet to set the standard for the more important events later in the year.
Long Course swimming is where all the major medals are won and so it’s important for the swimmers to carry forward skills gained in the short course season whilst gaining the feel of the longer pool.
Lots of the Elite swimmers had already swum long course a couple of times due to Commonwealth Games selection. There were some great swims by Niamh Hofland continuing her strong start to the season. Her first ever 1500m was particularly impressive. Lewis Hodgetts built on his improvements at Northampton with another strong showing, in particular the 100m fly. Holly Shepherd had a strong meet. Her 200 IM being the highlight. Tom Watkin swam a great 100m fc. Overall, there were lots of pleasing swims from the squad with room to build towards the window.
The National Development squad put in a strong showing, with lots of best times. Obviously being the first time swimming Long Course for 7 months improvements could be somewhat expected. Harry Negrine, Alex Jones, Emily Tite, Eve Williams, Chloe Harris, Morgan Lerpiniere had particularly strong meets. Zak Westwood and Holly Gregory joined the squad for the first time in the competition arena.
It was pleasing to see the previous weeks work on break outs and improvements in the ND squads starts all shining through. Embedding the skills needed at the top level to succeed.
County Championships are next especially for the ND squad when they represent their home clubs. Hopefully this will provide a perfect start to the 2018 championship season.
